Join our friendly, supportive sewing circle where beginners and experienced sewists stitch side-by-side. Bring your own project or start something new - repairs, alterations, quilting, patchwork, or learning how to use a machine. We learn from each other, share tips, and celebrate finished pieces. If you’re brand new, Mary will help you get started with a simple project.
Each session is relaxed and collaborative. Typical activities include:
- Simple repairs and alterations (hemming, patches, buttons)
- Quilting and patchwork techniques
- Reading patterns and fabric cutting basics
- Machine setup, threading, and safe operation
- Creative projects like tote bags, cushions, and small gifts
Mary offers guidance while the group shares knowledge - no pressure, progress at your pace.
Machines: A limited number of sewing machines are available to share. If you have your own machine, please bring it along (we can help you set it up).
Environment: Friendly, low-pressure, with tea/coffee provided.
Bring: Your project (if you have one), fabric, thread, scissors, pins, unpicker, and your sewing machine and foot pedal if possible.
We provide: Irons, cutting mats, spare tools, and friendly guidance. A few shared machines are available.
Cost: Free of charge. A gold coin donation is appreciated.
Mary is a patient, practical sewist with a love for sharing skills. She has helped hundreds of locals—from absolute beginners threading their first machine to confident quilters refining their techniques. Her approach is warm, encouraging, and safety-focused.
“There’s always a way to fix it—and we’ll do it together.”
Show your work! Each year we celebrate creativity at the Annual Art & Sewing Exhibition. Sewing Group participants are invited to display pieces, volunteer, or simply come along and cheer.
